Emperor Charles V at Augsburg in 1530 (1530)

In 1530, Charles V (r. 1519-56) called the Imperial Diet to Augsburg in order to settle the religious schism that had erupted. His entry into the city with an enormous entourage was one of the most spectacular ceremonies of the age. This woodcut is from a ten-part series dedicated to the events of the Diet. The series was probably commissioned by the Imperial court. This woodcut shows Charles (on the left) with his brother, King Ferdinand, and Count Palatine Frederick (both to his right). The papal legate Cardinal Campeggio can be seen as well. Woodcut by Jörg Breu the Elder (c. 1475-1537), 1530.
