Evening Prayer (1823)

This scene of three generations gathered for an evening prayer suggests the patriarchal nature of family life at the time: the head of the family sits at the table, his wife and children stand respectfully at varying distances from the table, and a grandparent rests nearby in a comfortable armchair.
