Kurt Tucholsky (1918)
Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935) was one of the most brilliant and politically engaged journalists and satirists of the Weimar era. A committed anti-militarist, pacifist, and left-liberal critic of the Weimar Republic, he published regularly in Die Weltbühne, both under his own name and a number of pseudonyms (Kaspar Hauser, Peter Panter, Theobald Tiger, Ignaz Wrobel). Tucholsky, who had mostly lived abroad since 1924 and who had no illusions about what a Nazi regime in Germany would mean, was devastated by the end of the Weimar Republic and Hitler’s subsequent rise to power. His books were banned and burned in 1933 and the Nazis revoked his German citizenship. He died in Sweden in 1935.
