Chancellor Ludwig Erhard and Rainer Barzel (1964)

Ludwig Erhard (right), father of the German "Economic Miracle" [Wirtschaftswunder] and Minister of Economics since 1949 (later also Vice-Chancellor) succeeded Konrad Adenauer in 1963. In contrast to his previous career as an economic expert, Erhard's time as Chancellor was controversial. His rivals within the party included Rainer Barzel (left), the vice-chairman of the parliamentary group of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) and the CSU (Christian Social Union). In 1966, due to the first postwar recession and a lack of support from his own party, Erhard stepped down after only three years in office. Photo by Klaus Lehnartz.
