Martin Luther as an Augustinian Friar (1520)

This is a very early portrait of Martin Luther as an Augustinian friar with tonsure and habit. Like many of the Luther images in circulation at the time, this woodcut is based on a portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder. It appeared on the title page of Babylonian Captivity of the Church, one of Luther’s three great pamphlets of 1520. Woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien (c. 1480-1545), 1520.
