Head On by Fatih Akin (February 2004)

Turkish-German director Fatih Akin happily poses for the cameras during a press conference at the Berlinale on February 14, 2004. His film Head On won the “Golden Bear” for best film at Berlin’s 54th International Film Festival. The film, which recounts the story of a young German-Turkish woman who tries to escape from her conservative family by way of a sham marriage, was the first German film to win the “Golden Bear” since 1986. Winning this award put Akin among the most highly regarded of German directors; he is known for depicting the conflicting feelings of German Turks from an insider's perspective. Photo: Jens Kalaene.
