Monetary Union: First Shipment of Western Goods at a Dresden Department Store (July 1, 1990)

On July 1, 1990, the monetary, economic, and social union between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic took effect. This photograph shows a crowd of shoppers peering in the windows of the Centrum department store on Dresden's Altmarkt [Old Market Square].
