The End of the Napoleonic Drama (1814)

“It’s coming to an end” [“Es geht zum Ende”] reads the caption to this cartoon, which has the major continental European monarchs playing a farewell serenade to Napoleon Bonaparte, who is “all ears.” It features (from left to right): Czar Alexander I, Francis I of Austria, Napoleon Bonaparte, Crown Prince Charles John (later Charles John XIV of Sweden), and Frederick William III of Prussia. Exiting the stage in a hurry are Napoleon’s former supporters and crowned clientele. Aquatint by Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850), 1814.
