German and Austrian Prisoners of War (1918)

According to the rules of warfare, enemy prisoners of war had to be interned. Here one sees a group of exhausted German and Austrian soldiers asleep in an internment camp following the Battle of Amiens in 1918. The conditions for captive soldiers were often miserable. The soldiers pictured here try to make themselves comfortable on a pile of lumber.
