The German Social Security System (1913)
This table advertises the benefits of the German social security system. It outlines provisions for medicines (under health insurance [Die Krankenversicherung], top-left corner), disabilities (under care for the disabled [Invaliden-Fürsorge], bottom-left corner), old-age pensions [Altersversicherung] (top-right corner), and survivor-benefits [Hinterbliebenen-Fürsorge] (bottom-right corner). Germany had the world’s most generous social welfare system at the turn of the century, and it served as a model for numerous other countries in subsequent years. The title of this table boasts that the “German social security is an unmatched example for the entire world.”
