Found – and Lost Again (1866)

This woodcut by Albert August Toller (1825-1898), Found – and Lost Again [Gefunden und wieder verloren] is from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. It provides a romantic depiction of a harsh reality of war: parents locate their wounded son among the thousands of casualties conveyed from the battlefield to a hospital, only to witness his death from battlefield wounds. Whether or not it was the artist’s intention, the grieving father bears an uncanny resemblance to King Wilhelm I of Prussia (1797-1888).
