Lazarus von Schwendi (1579)
The illegitimate son of a Swabian nobleman, Lazarus von Schwendi (1522-84) studied at Basel and Strasbourg. At age twenty-four, he entered the military service of Emperor Maximilian II., for whom he fought against the Protestant Schmalkaldic League in 1546-47, against France, in the Netherlands, and later against the Ottomans as supreme commander in Hungary.
