Caricature: State Treaty between the FRG and the GDR (1990) This caricature comments on the signing of the State Treaty on May 18, 1990. Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, larger than life, carries a dwarf-sized East German Prime Minister Lothar de Maizière, who is suspended from the treaty's seal. The cover of the treaty features a 1-Deutschmark coin. The treaty, which established a monetary, economic, and social union, fixed the date for the introduction of the Deutschmark (DM) in the German Democratic Republic – July 1, 1990.
