Heinrich Mann, The Loyal Subject [Der Untertan] (1918) Heinrich Mann’s (1871-1950) novel The Loyal Subject [Der Untertan] appeared in serialized form in a magazine from 1911 to 1913. During the war, the censors blocked its re-publication as a book because of its critical view of German militarism and ultra-nationalism. It was first published as a complete novel in Russian in 1915, and in German only in 1918. Here we see the cover of the first German edition.
