GDR Citizens Wave to Willy Brandt (March 19, 1970) Having broken through the barriers in front of the Erfurt train station, an enthusiastic crowd waves to the third floor of the Hotel Erfurter Hof, where Chancellor Willy Brandt has appeared at a window. Unhappy with their own leadership, East German citizens chanted “Willy, Willy.” Since Brandt did not wish to affront his hosts, he was careful to make gestures that were at once sympathetic and pacifying.
