Mischnick, Wolfgang

Mischnick, Wolfgang (1921-2002); FDP; 1945, member the Liberal Democratic Party of Germany (LDPD) in Saxony; escaped to the West after conflicts with the Soviet occupying force and the SED; made a career as party functionary in the Free Democratic Party (FDP); 1957-94, member of the German Bundestag; 1968-91, FDP faction leader; was an early advocate of improving West Germany’s relations with the East; initially opposed the breakup of the SPD-FDP coalition; played a leading role in merging the FDP and the LDPD in 1989-90.
