Hindenburg Election Poster (1932)

By the time of the 1932 elections, President Paul von Hindenburg was well into his eighties and in less than perfect health. Still, this did not prevent the Center and the Right from presenting him as a symbol of masculine prowess and stability, and as a link to the bygone imperial age. Hindenburg also received ample support from the Social Democrats, who saw him as the only way to stop Hitler. In this pro-Hindenburg campaign poster, the aged former war hero appears as Atlas, holding up a globe emblazoned with the German imperial eagle. He dwarfs Hitler, who stands beside him exclaiming, “But I’m still much stronger.”
