A Schrebergarten in Frankfurt an der Oder (24. April 2009)

Although the last decades have brought dramatic social change to Germany, many beloved traditions have persisted. For example, allotment gardens (also known as Schreber gardens [Schrebergärten]) have existed in Germany in various forms since the nineteenth century. Today, there are more than a million of them, and 15,200 allotment garden associations are currently registered with the Federal Association of German Gardening Enthusiasts (figures from 2010). This photograph shows a Schreber garden in the “Railway Employees Gardening Enthusiasts” club in Frankfurt (on the Oder). Photo by Patrick Pleul.
