Caricature of the Politicians of the '68 Generation (February 10, 2003)

This caricature, “Then and Now,” by Berlin artist Klaus Stuttmann offers an ironic commentary on how the so-called ‘68 generation changed over time. It portrays, from left to right, Otto Schily (federal interior minister, 1998-2005), Joschka Fischer (federal foreign minister, 1998-2005), Gerhard Schröder (chancellor, 1998-2005), Jürgen Trittin (federal minister of the environment, 1998-2005), Rudolf Scharping (federal defense minister, 1998-2002), and Rezzo Schlauch (head of the Green Party Bundestag faction, 1998-2002, and parliamentary state secretary, 2002-2005). In the “then” picture (above), Fischer is depicted as a stone-thrower (a reference to his early years in the Frankfurt squatters’ scene), and Scharping is portrayed as a demonstrator with a sign that readers “Yanks out of Vietnam.” In the “now" picture (below), his demand has changed to “Yanks into Afghanistan.” In the “now” picture, the 68ers still hold the same banner – “Long live international solidarity” – but its red background, symbolizing left-wing ideology, has grown pale.
