Nikolaus Joseph von Esterházy (18th Century)

The Hungarian noble family Esterházy had a long history of supporting the Austrian Habsburgs. Nikolaus Joseph von Esterházy (1714-90) rose to become both an Austrian field marshal and a generous patron of the arts. He is known, above all, for his longstanding patronage of composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). Painting by unknown artist, eighteenth century.
