European Council (June 30, 1987)

The European Community summit meeting in Brussels (June 29-30, 1987) under the chairmanship of Belgian minister president Wilfried Martens took place immediately before the Single European Act took effect on July 1, 1987. The meeting affirmed some of the treaty’s particular goals: transforming the common market into a Single European Market by December 31, 1992, reforming common institutions, and promoting economic and social cohesion through structural policy. This “family photo” of heads of government and foreign ministers was taken at a dinner hosted by Belgium’s King Baudouin in the royal place. The first row includes: Helmut Kohl (4th from the right), Margaret Thatcher (6th from the left), François Mitterand (7th from the left), Wilfried Martens (7th from the right).
