Archive for Social Science and Policy (1905)

In 1903, after suffering a nervous breakdown, the eminent sociologist Max Weber (1864-1920) took a leave from the University of Heidelberg to become editor of the Archive for Social Science and Policy [Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik], a journal dedicated to social-scientific inquiry. Published from 1904 to 1933, the journal had an enormous influence on the development of social science in Germany. It is also important to note that Weber’s co-editors, Werner Sombart (1863-1941) and Edgar Jaffé (1866-1921), were major scholars in their own right.

Below is the title page from a 1905 journal issue. It reads: “Archive for Social Science and Policy. New Series of the Archive for Social Legislation and Statistics, founded by Heinrich Braun. Edited by Werner Sombart (Professor in Breslau), Max Weber (Professor in Heidelberg), and Edgar Jaffé (In Heidelberg). Volume 20 (2nd Volume of the New Series). Tübingen, JCB Mohr Publishers (Paul Siebeck). 1905.”
