László Moholy-Nagy, Marseilles, Port View (1929) László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) was a versatile and prolific artist who at various times worked in painting, sculpture, architecture, typography, photography, and film. Recruited to teach at the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius in 1922, he ran the metalworking workshop but also taught photography and edited the school’s Bauhaus Books series. Like Gropius and many others, Moholy-Nagy sought to break down the barriers between life and art, as well as among all the various genres and media. This 1929 photograph shows Moholy-Nagy’s preoccupation with repeating forms.
