German-Turkish Elementary School Class (November 5, 1998)
This photograph shows a third-grade class at Nürtingen Elementary School in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighborhood. The school, which educates German students alongside children of foreign descent, uses modern educational methods developed by the Italian doctor Maria Montessori. Accordingly, students are given greater freedom to pursue their own interests and inclinations. The 137,000-strong Turkish community in Berlin, which includes 30,000 school children, constitutes the largest group of foreign nationals in the capital. Integration is hampered by the migrant children’s poor scholastic performance. Photo: Jens Kalaene.
