A Jewish Dandy (1804)
The French Revolution’s granting of civil equality to French Jews reinforced support for a similar course of action in Germany. At the same time, however, the advancing social and cultural integration of Jews into German society triggered new anti-Jewish responses in some quarters. Produced in Berlin, this unfriendly depiction of a “Jewish dandy” shows a well-to-do fop admiring himself, and his finery, in a hand mirror. Copperplate engraving by an unknown artist, 1804.
