The World Mourns Konrad Adenauer (April 25, 1967)
After resigning as Federal Chancellor in October 1963, Konrad Adenauer continued to remain active in politics. Until March 1966, he led the CDU as party chairman, and he contined to speak out publicly on key issues in contemporary politics. In April 1967, the 91-year-old Adenauer died in Rhöndorf, a town near Bonn. On April 25, 1967, a state ceremony was held in Bonn in honor of the former Chancellor, and Cardinal Joseph Frings led a requiem in the Cologne Cathedral. Among the guests were French President Charles de Gaulle and American President Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as 11 heads of state and 17 foreign ministers from various nations. Photographer unknown.
