Salon from the Gründerzeit (c. 1905)
Here, we see the salon of Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929), one of Wilhelmine Germany’s most important art historians and a founder of the modern German museum. His house was located at Uhlandstrasse 4/5 in Charlottenburg, then a suburb of Berlin. Two portraits by Max Liebermann hang on the left wall: one of Bode himself (1904) and another of his daughter (1894). With its dark wood paneling and plush velvet, the interior is typical of upper-middle-class homes of the Gründerzeit of the 1870s. This style remained popular until the First World War.
